The course is surrounded by gentle hills connected to the river and its length is about 400 meters from the edge of the water. As it is located in a nature reserve, the wildlife around the square is abundant. Along the routes there are many blue birds and deer, as well as birds of prey such as owls, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, ducks, geese, turkeys and other wildlife.

Joe Wheeler Marina is located on the east side of the Tennessee River, just a few hundred yards from the park entrance. The covered and open sheets at the marina offer a great view of the river and the surrounding area as well as the State Park itself. Several miles of coastline bordered by the marina form part of this park and provide a natural backdrop, and the location of these marinas is truly one of the most tranquil on the Tennessee River.

Currently, there are 24-foot roofed briefs, 50-foot roofed and open briefs, and 30-foot roofed open briefs.

The marina is a popular place for sailors and there are 88 undiscovered sailboat slides, and the power supply to the other docks has recently been renewed. The jetty near the new docks is home to sailboats, a small boat ramp and a jetty for kayaking.

The cabins are located in the cabins on the west side of the park, near the lake, and there is a cabin area surrounded by a small beach with picnic area, a beach house and a boat ramp.

The brick cottages are located on a hill overlooking Wheeler Lake and each has a cabin that can accommodate 4 to 15 people. They also have wooden cottages in the area, but the lake is not nearby, so they are not accessible from the cottages.

The cabins are equipped with simple household management and cooking facilities, TV with basic programming, dishwasher and a network. The area is a popular destination for fishermen, but numerous family celebrations and church retreats have also been organized.

The cottages are equipped with bed linen, crockery and cookware and each room has satellite TV and DVD player. Ten newly built lakeside cabins are located at the mouth of First Creek and have two or three bedrooms. Each cottage has central heating, air conditioning and a fireplace and is equipped with basic household management and cooking facilities, TV with basic programs, network and dishwasher.

Joe Wheeler Resort State Park also acts like a primitive campground, where guests can use the bathhouse next to the C-loop campsite. The improved campsites have 116 pitches with 110 connections, including water, electricity and sewage. These are a popular camper spot and have large flat pitches with towering pine trees and views of First Creek and the lake.

The round campsite has a modern bathhouse with hot shower, but the place has no electricity and there are no water hydrants in the area. The full-service restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at Joe Wheeler Resort State Park Campground, just blocks from the campsite.

It is open to the public seven days a week, but only on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 12 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm.

In summer we offer a fish buffet on Saturday evenings and on Sunday we prepare an exquisite buffet for Sunday brunch. Switch on your pontoon boat, relax and enjoy delicious food while gazing out over the lake.

Life jackets and safety equipment are available at Joe Wheeler State Park and a number of other parks in the area.

Smallmouth is a former world record smallmouth caught in these oxygen-rich waters. Cabin guests are regularly seen emptying the fridge after catching catfish on their way to and from the dam.

Three species of striped bass live in these waters, and cappie is a big attraction in spring, when anglers know the right place. Bream can be caught in many places in the park and is popular with anglers, but it is most popular at the picnic spots Joe Wheeler uses during the day.
