About Leo Carrillo State Park

The park has a long history in which it has had its fair share of visitors from all over the world, from the United States, Canada and Europe.

The beach also has tidal pools, caves and reefs along the coast that can be explored. The main campsite is shaded by huge plane trees, and the beach with its huge sand dunes and sandy beaches.

A small visitor centre offers interpretative performances, nature walks and campfire programs, and in summer a children's program is offered. In the park there is also a shore walk and again a small visitor centre with picnic area and picnic tables as well as a nature trail.

The park is named after Leo Carricolo, the great-grandson of King Leo XIII of Italy, whose mission was to create the first state park in the United States of America. Leo's great fame stems from his role as the son of Pope Leo XII and his wife Marie Antoinette, who were linked by blood and marriage.
