About Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands National Park, which consists of four islands in the North Atlantic off the coast of South Africa, is one of the largest national parks in North America and the second largest in Europe after the Great Lakes.

Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to endangered blue whales, which are among the largest animals on Earth. There are over 2,000 plant and animal species in the park, but only four mammals are native to the islands. One hundred and forty-five species are unique to these islands and nowhere else in the world.

Archaeological and cultural resources date back more than 10,000 years, archaeological sites up to 3,500 years ago.

The park covers 249,354 acres, half of which are in the ocean and the other half the densely populated Southern California coast. The islands are relatively undeveloped and therefore an exciting place for visitors to explore. Transport is a must - for campers, as the concession boats fill with day visitors once the limits of the campsites are reached.

The Channel Islands National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, attracting more than 1.5 million visitors a year, according to the park's website.

Private boaters and kayakers camping on the islands must have the necessary camping permits and be able to moor at berths or in some sheltered anchorages.

The conditions on the islands are primitive and all users must camp on a designated campsite. Some campsites are equipped with pits, toilets and picnic tables, but the conditions on some islands are primitive.

Due to the extreme fire danger, the islands are closed for campfires and campfires are only allowed if a ring of fire has been set up. Some islands allow stoves to be stored all year round, but water must be brought and is not available in the winter months due to high temperatures and low water levels.

There are windscreen campsites on both the islands of San Miguel and Santa Rosa, and both have windscreens on some campsites.

The campsites are usually close together, but if the place is full, there may be overcrowding, so please plan ahead.

The campsite on East Anacapa Island is located about one mile from the jetty and is 154 steps high. There are 7 campsites with a capacity of 30 people each and there is no refuse collection service, so campers have to pack their own garbage. Be prepared to carry your tent and equipment from your landing site to the campsite.

Santa Barbara campsite is about 1.2 miles uphill from the jetty, and East Anacapa campsite is about 3 miles.

There are 8 campsites with a capacity of 30 people each, all within a kilometre of the beach. The campsite in San Miguel is located about one kilometer from the beach and is sheltered from the wind.

Fewer than 200 people a year have camped on San Miguel Island, but there are a number of other campsites in the Channel Islands National Park, such as the one on the west side of the island.

There are 15 campsites with a capacity of up to 50 people, and Santa Rosa campsite in Water Canyon is located on the west side of San Miguel Island, south of the main campsite. This campsite has running water, although most people bring drinking water.

All supplies and equipment are on the islands, and campers must adapt to the primitive tents and weather conditions. The campsites are 1.2 - 1 km long, with beaches, apartments and a valley floor. The campers on Santa Cruz Island are located in the Scorpion Valley and have 40 pitches that can accommodate 4 to 6 people per pitch.

At most landing sites, equipment must be transported by ladder to the campsite, and boats and concessionaires need bags weighing less than 40 pounds.

Loading and unloading can lead to wetness, so it is advisable to make the equipment waterproof. Additional pairs of shoes and waterproof material are recommended, and equipment should be marked for trips to several islands.

Clothes that protect against wind are advisable all year round, but campers should plan to layer clothes as weather conditions are more likely to cause problems in winter than in the summer months.

Half of the Channel Islands National Park consists of the waters surrounding the islands and stretching for miles along the coast. The waters of the park offer a variety of recreational activities, including secluded anchorages, kayaking, fishing and exploring the 175 miles of coastline. Private boaters can dock in the park for a fee of $5 per day or $10 per hour for the whole year.

Boaters should always submit a formal swimming plan to the harbour master before departure, boaters to their harbour master. Family and friends should also be informed of your swimming plans, but remember to be flexible with your plans and the weather should always give directions both ways.

This is an important shipping route between the islands and the mainland, and private boaters should be aware of their situation when crossing. Since the waters around the Channel Islands National Park are often closed to military operations, boaters should listen to Coast Guard messages to sailors broadcast on VHF channel 22 to get information on when and where they can cross the coast.

West Anacapa Island and Frenchy Cove are protected research areas and closed to visitors; no permit is required. Visitors are only allowed to enter Central Anacapa if accompanied by a park ranger and only on foot or by boat.

All boats, including kayaks and inflatables, should moor at the quay; landing areas are only available for unloading. It is recommended that one person always stays on board and that private boaters are not more than 3 m from the shore.

Access to the islands is only permitted via landing bays; landing areas are only available for unloading. Permits are required for land walks on Santa Barbara Island and access to all other islands in the Channel Islands National Park.

All boats, including kayaks and inflatables, should be moored at the quay; private boaters are not allowed to anchor. There is no anchorage on San Miguel Island; all boats must be anchored at the foot of the berths on both sides of Santa Barbara Island. Lift the dinghy from the top of your landing and place it on a rock shelf or near the dock by the sea.

Anchoring overnight is limited to Cuyler Harbor and Tyler Bight; visitors are only allowed to dock at Cueyler Harbour. Accommodation is limited to Cayenne Bay on the south side of the island and Tyler Bay on the north side.

On Santa Rosa Island, boaters with a daily permit are only allowed to dock at coastal beaches, docking on rocks and small islands is not allowed. Beaches on the north side of Channel Islands National Park, including Skunk Point and East Point, have been closed to protect the endangered plover. Boaters without a day permit, with or without a boating licence, may only dock off the east coast of the islands and no private boaters may dock on them.

This area is owned by the National Park Service and is located on the north side of Channel Island Harbor on Santa Rosa Island, south of East Point Beach.

Boaters can contact rangers on Santa Cruz Island via VHF Channel 16 at the pier or boaters in the Channel Island Harbor on 1 - 888 - 662 - 4357.

Boaters should exercise extreme caution during the beach and landing maneuvers and prepare for landings elsewhere on the island. Scorpion has landing platforms available, but inflatable boats must not be tied to the jetty, jetties or prisoners are unsafe and can be used or used at any time. Landing points and prisoners can also be unsafe on the beaches of Santa Cruz Island and other islands.

Overnight stays on the island are not permitted and it may take 10-12 days to process requests.

There is no fee, but the Nature Conservation Authority requires a permit for overnight stays of at least two days and no more than three days.

Rangers run live underwater video programs, and visitors can watch these programs without ever getting wet feet. This unique program includes live video and audio recordings of underwater activities such as kayaking, diving, snorkeling, fishing and other activities.
