About Butano State Park

Butano State Park is located in Butano County, California, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. The park has a total area of 1.5 million square meters of land and 1,000 hectares of water.

In summer guided hikes and campfire programs are offered, in winter camping, hiking, fishing and camping. Drinking water is available on the campsite and in the areas for daily use, but there are no toilets or running water on any of the campsites.

How to get there : Go 2.5 miles to Cloverdale Road, turn left on Highway 1 inland on Pescadero Road and go south on Butano State Park Road for 3 miles. Turn left into the park and turn right into the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds parking lot at the southern end of Butono Creek.

The Jackson Flats Trail signs start just outside the park entrance kiosk at the entrance to Butano State Park, south of the parking lot.

The trail starts in a meadow and soon leads to sequoia, and the trail follows Little Butano Creek, which cuts through the gorge. The trail crosses the Muhlenox Trail and follows it for a few kilometres until it crosses the stream into the river valley, south of the car park.

Soon the trail joins the Goat Hill Trail, which follows a mixed forest of oak and mahogany and leads to the left. From Muhlenox Trail, turn left and follow the permitted traffic signs for a few miles until you turn right into the Butano State Park parking lot and follow it for about one kilometer.

At the crossroads with the Ano Nuevo path, the Olmo Fire Path leads to the left and the slope covered with fir and blackberry trees leads to the clearing where the AnoNueva lookout is located.

On a clear day, you can look south to Anos Nuesvo Island and north to San Francisco Bay and San Jose Bay.

From the lookout point, a series of steep, rocky paths with enough steep slopes to make a snake dizzy, leads back to the park entrance. In summer, guided hikes and campfire programs offer a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, hiking and camping.
