About Dam East Recreation Area - South Shore Park

Carlyle Lake (26,000 acres) is located within two miles of the park on leased land on the south bank of South Shore State Park, north of San Diego.

The park, which has preserved many of its historic buildings and structures, also offers a variety of leisure facilities, including two 3 / 4 mile long routes that are also used periodically as a 3-D archery range.

The South Shore State Park is home to many animal species, and a popular activity is the stag tail boar. In addition to deer, the park is also the habitat of a variety of blue birds, including the blue heron, the American blue bird, the black-nosed hawk, the black-nosed falcon and many others. The park has a large number of interpretative signs, such as the South Shore Trail and the Blue Bird Trail.

The South Shore State Park also benefits local wildlife, including deer, elk, elk, coyotes, foxes, wolves and other wildlife.

More than 200,000 waterfowl make their way to South Shore State Park in winter, and birds of prey such as ducks, geese, turkeys, ducks and other birds are also frequently seen in the park.

The Hickory Hollow Campground has 33 tents, trailers and vehicles, and there is electricity and showers for campers. Nearby there is a waste disposal station as well as a picnic area, picnic tables and a water fountain.

Hickory Hollow is an alcohol-free campsite, but campers must obtain permission from park staff before entering the campsite. The campgound is located on Carlyle Lake and offers breathtaking lake views, allowing many campers to keep their boats in the sheltered bay between the campsites and the shore.

A large boat ramp operated by the Engineering Corps is located right next to the park, and a small jetty is located in the Deer Run Access Area in the northern part of the park. The small boats and jetties are located on Carlyle Lake and the Deer Lake access area, as well as the Deer Run and Deer Run access areas, both located near the North and South shores.

Sailing boats are welcome on all lakes, and in the park there are boat rentals and a small boat ramp in the access area to the Hirschlauf. There is also a boat rental service for all parks, in addition to the large boat ramps and jetties.

Many of the access areas have been demolished to protect the coast from erosion, and some areas also offer good fishing spots. Fishermen can catch a wide variety of fish, such as bluefish, mackerel, perch, tuna, wallise, redfish and other species.

The park can be reached from five day areas equipped with tables and barbecues, and a picnic area at Bluebell Crappie Cove provides access for groups of 25 or more, which requires prior permission from the park office.

Water fountains and toilets are conveniently located, and there is a willingness to make concessions for those who want a more intimate experience on the south coast.

The US Army Corps of Engineers operates South Shore State Park and Carlyle Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and most visitors to Carlyles Lake want to see the Great Lakes and Eldon Lake, as well as the scenic views of the Pacific Ocean.

The Corps also operates an information line 618 - 594 - 4637, which contains recorded information about the park and its facilities and activities.
