About Hidden Springs State Forest

The forest area consists of three separate sections covering parts of eight land sections with a total area of about 1,500 hectares. The terrain varies from relatively steep slopes to relatively steep slopes through which Richland Creek flows, but generally the topography is gently hilly and broken up by small currents. Hidden Springs State Forest, one of the largest state forests in the United States, consists of more than 2,000 acres of forest.

Plantations, both native and introduced, include a variety of trees, shrubs, grasses and other plant and animal species. Trees are native to the forest, but have been drilled and replanted in the past for agriculture, forestry, mining, oil and gas production, and as a natural resource.

Besides the forest, the park also has bees and a number of other natural resources such as water, water quality and wildlife habitat.

Pine and pine plantations are maintained and voluntary groups help to collect pine cones in autumn.

In August, the coves of the white pine are picked with cones open to the seed, and in August and September the white pine and bay leaf are harvested for cultivation.

During the forest visits, many different types of seeds and nuts are collected and sent to state nurseries for processing and planting. Demonstrations of pine cultivation show the desired thinning and pruning processes that are carried out on pine plantations. Tree removal is done and shredded wood is distributed along forest paths. Thinning out of many pine plantations begins in spring, with the thinned-out areas used for food cover and planting.

Management objectives include the protection of natural resources of the forest, such as water quality, flora and fauna, and management of wildlife.

The forest improvement demonstration area shows some of the species that would be removed as forest if properly managed. Several areas are managed for the removal of trees and invasive species, as well as for the protection of wildlife and water quality.

When the forest plots were acquired, they showed the harmful effects of erosion and immediate steps were taken to reduce damage to topsoil. In Hidden Springs, soil stabilization measures such as soil erosion control and erosion prevention were used to stabilize the soil. Six experimental plots will be maintained to show the effects of forest fires.

In the case of Hidden Springs, soil stabilization measures such as soil erosion control and erosion prevention have been beneficial for soil health and quality.

The name Hidden Springs was chosen to denote this particular state forest, as there are seven known springs on the property that were used by the early settlers for drinking water. Rock fountains and quicksand springs have access routes, and the springs have been covered over the years with natural mud and vegetation, hence the name "Hidden Springs."

The entire forest area was originally planned as a state lake, but this plan was changed when construction of the Shelbyville reservoir began.

In the 1960s, the land was given to the forest administration, which administered it as a state forest. In the course of the reorganisation of the department in 1975, it was assigned as a department for land and historical sites.

Possum Creek Class - C campsite includes a campsite, picnic area, outdoor recreation area and campsite. The area will continue to be managed with compatible leisure facilities, complemented by a range of leisure activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing and camping.

Campers can camp at the site of their choice, but Shady Grove Campground is a reservation - for groups only. The permits are issued by forest officials during routine rounds, the tent permits by the forest office.

Rolling Meadows picnic area features picnic tables, picnic chairs, play equipment, a picnic table and a fireplace. Fire spots on the ground are only allowed in the provided fireplaces, but not on the campground or on the grounds.

Three small, secluded places offer a variety of picnic areas with picnic tables, picnic chairs, playground equipment and fireplaces. The small picnic area near the Great Tree has a table and stove, but no fireplace and no picnic table.

Possum's Hollow nature trail is about 3 km long and offers access to the pond park and pine forests. Visitors are taken to 35 interpreting stations by staff from the National Park and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

A 17-mile fire path also provides access to remote woodlands, and the three-mile Rocky Spring Trail includes a walnut-growing area and a wooded area with a creek. The 3.5-kilometre trail from the main entrance to the park to the crossroads offers a picturesque view of the stream, pond and pine forest, as well as the fire bridge. Please understand that footpaths and fire bridges have been closed to motorcycles and horses.

Those who want to enjoy the many songbirds on the grounds can behave with a bird checklist from the headquarters. A pleasant and peaceful forest environment awaits visitors to Hidden Springs State Park, a popular destination for birdwatchers and birdwatchers alike.

In the forest grow flowers and mushrooms, as well as a variety of trees, shrubs, grasses and other plants such as pineapple, birch, pine, fruit orchards, trees and shrubs.

Drive 4 miles into the city of Strasburg and turn left onto the road for 3 miles, then turn right onto the freeway and continue for another 3 miles until you reach the entrance to Hidden Springs State Forest.
