About Clifty Falls State Park

Clifty Falls State Park is located near Madison and is accessible from Interstate 56 / 62. It is one of the most popular parks in Wisconsin.

The name Clifty Falls paints a beautiful picture in the head and the winter and spring hikes Show the waterfalls at their best, while the rugged grandeur of the streams and canyons offers an exciting landscape year - all around. Plan a visit to the park and enjoy a ride along the beautiful Ohio River or visit the historic Madison Tour with a stop at the James Madison Museum of Art or the Wisconsin State Capitol.

People are always fascinated by the rugged geological splendour of this place, which bears witness to the powerful forces of nature and the beauty of the natural world.

In this place, Clifty Falls, with its deeply carved gorge and waterfall, and the nearby Ohio River, are the product of the Ice Age. The Ohio River bed itself was a sand and gravel ditch that absorbed meltwater from the glacier mass and essentially marked the southernmost advance of a glacier northward. The Cl 50 Falls and its gorge are other erosion features, but they and the nearby Ohio River were the products of an ice age.

Clifty Creek plunges more than 70 feet from the lip of Clifty Falls to a height above the county's general level. The stream flows at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level and flows 250 feet to a depth of 2,500 feet below the creek bed. It flows through the gorge at an altitude of 3,200 feet, with a maximum flow rate of about 500 feet per hour.

Four large and numerous small waterfalls are located in the park, as well as a small waterfall at the foot of Clifty Falls and several smaller ones in the gorge.

It is the oldest rock dig in Indiana and houses one of the largest collections of fossils and remains of ancient marine life in the United States. The remains of dinosaurs, sea lions, sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles and other marine mammals are buried in the rock formation.

In 1853, the Madison - Indianapolis Railroad Company began construction of a railroad line that would run west of Madison and connect a postal line about a mile north of Madison. Two tunnels were planned, but the lower tunnel was barely operational when the upper tunnel, which crossed the rock face south of the tunnel to the waterfalls, was dug when financial problems forced the closure of the plant.

For many years, the park covered 617 hectares, including the waterfall gorge and the immediate edge of the highlands, but by 1965 it had more than doubled. The pillars and abutments are still visible, and part of a path in the parks follows the original structures. These ancient fields provide the space needed for modern leisure activities such as hiking, cycling, canoeing, fishing, camping, hiking and other activities.

The original Clifty Inn first opened its doors to guests in August 1924, and the waterfalls are perched high on rocks overlooking the Ohio River. The panorama can be seen from the Cl fifty Inn, but also from other parts of the park, such as the waterfall gorge.

Over the years, the Clifty Inn has changed visually, and the recent renovations have just been completed. Countless travellers from around the world have visited this cliff top hostel to relax and enjoy some of the most scenic natural wonders.

The Clifty Inn now consists of 63 rooms and 4 suites and, after 76 years, still offers professional staff to cater for anyone seeking the beauty and history of the Madison area. The remaining 27 rooms (4 of which are suites) are located in the main building, which also houses an indoor pool and a hot tub. It also houses a restaurant, bar and hair salon, as well as a fitness centre and wellness centre.

If you have successfully created a map that will take you to the gate on state road 62, please do not use 2221 Clifty Drive as your destination address. Customers using this address as a destination have been led into a dead end because the major online card services interpret 1501 Green Road and it is not visible from the entrance to the park.
