About E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park

The E.P. "Tom Sawyer" State Park is the largest U.S. national park and one of the oldest in North America. The 550-acre park is located on the west side of Lake Michigan, north of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Part of the land was once used as farmland and psychiatric hospital, part as a hospital. Named after Justice Tom Sawyer, the first US Supreme Court justice, E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park was originally purchased for the park by the Kentucky Department of Mental Health in June 1969 by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The land and buildings were leased by the Kentucky Department of Parks in the 1970s to Louisville, Kentucky, the area's first park. It was opened in 1974 as the largest national park of its kind in North America and the second largest in Indiana.

Louisville and Jefferson County are the largest urban centers in Kentucky, and Kentucky is the state with the largest cities and counties. Louisville, Kentucky, with its population of more than 1.5 million, is one of the most desirable cities in the USA - after places where people first settled after the Civil War, making it the second largest city in the country after New York City. Besides the city of Louisville and its fast-growing Jefferson County, Louisville is also home to Louisville International Airport, a major international airport.

Louisville is named in honor of King Louis XVI of France, after the French monarchs who supported the American struggle for independence from Great Britain during the Revolution. The Ohio River city has become a major commercial center, and celebrities from America and Europe come to Louisville for business and pleasure.

Charles Dickens visited the city and wrote: "The Galt House Hotel is as good as any other hotel in Paris. The city has always been a tourist destination for many of the world's most famous artists, musicians and entertainers.

Louisville is best known as the home of the Kentucky Derby, the oldest thoroughbred race in the world, and since 1875 the first Saturday in May has been dedicated to the best thoroughbred race.

Millions of people watch TV and listen to the radio for the horse racing premieres, but Louisville has also been visited by Elvis Presley, Billie Holiday, John Lennon, George Harrison and many others.

This extraordinary city park is a natural setting for the Kentucky Derby and other major events in the city of Louisville, Kentucky.

There are activities and events that offer something for even the most demanding individuals. The park is open all year round and there are three picnic shelters for public use, as well as a picnic area with picnic tables and picnic benches.

The shelter No. 1 is located in the main parking lot next to the playground and the shelter No. 2 on the west side of the park. Both areas are marked as "reserved" and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The rental rates include a sand volleyball court and a horseshoe pit, and each has an attached toilet, picnic tables, picnic table and picnic chairs. It has a parking lot with two parking spaces, two picnic areas, an outdoor picnic area and a water fountain.
