On the border with America, salt has long been a lucrative business, and one way to promote it was to find a salt reservoir, boil water, and collect salt. In the winter of 1829, men drilled a well for brine, but on March 11, 1829, men drilling for salt water found an oil well instead.

The pressure of gas and oil on the surface forced a huge geyser into the air, and the water in the reservoir spilled into Dale Hollow Lake.

In 1934, the Kentucky General Assembly put up a plaque saying that this was the first oil well in America. Although there are many disputes over this claim, Kentucky's oil wells remain one of the most famous in the United States, if not the world.
