About Standing Stone State Forest

The forest was built on land bought by the resettlement administration and built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1955 it passed to the state and became a national forest in 1961, then to India in 1972.

It is located in the eastern part of the state, about 20 miles north of Cookeville, and is cut by State Route 136. It borders to the east the Tennessee River, the Cumberland River and the border with the USA, but it is also cut into the woods at the intersection of State Highway 136 and Interstate 65.

Most of the country is eroded and damaged, and 90.2% of this country is in regulated forests, 8% is unregulated forests and 1.6% is mixed hardwood pine forests. Of the total area of the Standing Stone state forest, 81 years old, 36 are 61 - 80 years old, 10 - 9 are 41 - 60 years old, 7 - 3 are 21 - 40 years old and only 7.4 are less than 20 years old. The forest area is exposed, 0.3 is pine, 1.6 is mixed forest - deciduous pine forest, 2,5 is grassland, 3.2 are forested, 4.1 is wetland and 5.4 is open forest.

Hunting is the traditional use of the forest, but other recreational uses such as hiking and horse riding are also included. There are 14 cemeteries in the two forests, and in each there is a cemetery, and in one forest there is a burial ground and in another two.
