About Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Greenbo Lake State Resort Park attracts thousands of people from across the three-state area and you can enjoy the rugged beauty of the hills of eastern Kentucky. The idea of a recreational lake in northeastern Kentucky was born and Greenbo Lake is literally a dream for anglers. From this rugged, beautiful lake you can enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, camping and hiking.

The association took up the idea and decided to make plans for the lake and to collect donations and pledges. The project spread quickly and many people from Greenup and Boyd Counties were eager to participate. The next meeting, the Green up Fish and Game Club brought a group of members of its local fishing club along and they discussed the possibility of a recreational lake at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park in the hills of eastern Kentucky.

During the planning process, the number of participants in the club's weekly meetings grew to 50 or more and enthusiasm grew rapidly throughout the county.

The current shape of the lake was formed by the confluence of the Clay Lick Creek tributaries Buffalo Fork and Pruitt Fork. Two options for the property were considered and both were considered superior, but neither option was taken. The Sand Suck and ClayLick areas have been reported to be among the most scenic areas in the entire state of North Carolina and are also the best for hiking and camping. The clay leakage area is considered superior due to its proximity to the stream and its natural beauty.

A competition was held to name a new organization, with the winner being GreenBo Lake State Resort Park Association (GLSAA) of North Carolina.

The name was adopted and the organization was founded on January 29, 1953, and Greenup's Bill Biggs proposed the name "Greenup Recreation Association," reflecting the efforts of the citizens of Green Up and Boyd Counties.

Concerted efforts have been made to raise the money needed to buy the land, build a good road through the rugged hills and build the dam and other facilities to create a beautiful park.

Newspaper articles and editorials also supported the project, and Greenbo representatives gave speeches at public meetings, such as the annual Greenup-Boyd County Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Personal contacts with local companies in the industry prompted Armco, Steele, and Ashland Oil to agree to match the amount their employees had donated, and letters were sent to all who signed promise cards. Light at Night was a great success and brought in a considerable amount of money.

It was announced that anyone wishing to donate would turn their fairy lights, donated by volunteers and collectors, into night lights.

A fish fry at KY Route 5 was donated to the organization and then sold with the proceeds of $50,000. In total, 210,500 euros were collected and 33 landowners bought land, according to the deed book, and the land was bought by 33 owners with deeds.

Empty houses and buildings were razed to the ground, bushes were cut down in the planned lake basin and contracts for the construction of the dam were signed.

Governor Lawrence Wetherby agreed to an inspection and was thrilled to find that the lake was full and that there were already more than 1,000 people on it than on any other lake in the United States. We flew to Ashland Airport, where we met with Greenbo's representatives and took a guided tour on a pontoon boat, and were guided around the lake. The governor was impressed by the natural beauty of the area and agreed, accepting the act with his typical broad smile.

Soon after, the state stepped in and began to make all the above improvements on leased land and vacation homes, as well as building a hotel, restaurant and other amenities.

This beautiful lake-view building is named after a famous Kentucky writer whose birthplace was just a few miles from the park.

Enjoy the beautiful nature of Greenbo Lake Campsite and have a place to have fun and spend some quality time with your family, friends and other campers. This campsite has a picnic area, picnic tables, a fireplace and picnic table, and lots of picnic benches.

Some rooms are available in the late afternoon and some in the late afternoon, such as GreenBo Lake Lodge, Boulder Lodge and Boulder Hotel.

Next to the lake there is a children's area under raintrees and the communal pool has a water slide.

The swimming pool next to this lodge is reserved exclusively for guests of the lodge.

The Claylick circuit is marked blue and starts at the sign Park Marina, follows a forest path, descends to the lake, circles the original starting position and follows the path along forest paths. This trail offers a 1.5 km loop around GreenBo Lake State Resort Park overlooking the wooded reef and beautiful Greenbo Forest. The trail leads from the main parking lot of the park through the forest, down the stream and then up the hill again and into the forest.

Belwood # 3 is listed as a path on the map, and Belwood # 3 on the parking map for the Claylick Round and Greenbo Forest Trail.

The Michael Tygart Loop Trail starts at Jesse Stuart Lodge, follows the Fern Valley Trail for a mile, then turns left and follows it for another mile. After 1.5 miles the path crosses the road, passes the cemetery and continues to the Blackberry Shelter (Shelter 1 on the map). From here the path passes a few small streams, comes to Bays Ridge Road, sees some abandoned houses, crosses the stream and leads over a cemetery. Drive straight ahead and follow the yellow flames to Pruitt Fork Valley, where you come down a short hill. From there follow the yellow marked paths until you come to B Bay Ridge Road.

The Michael Tygart Loop Trail is best in autumn, winter and spring, but best in autumn and winter or spring. The Carpenter Run Trail starts at Jesse Stuart Lodge, turns left at the sign and then follows the red flames, then follows the trail along the shore to B Bay Ridge Road.

The Carpenter Run also follows a forest path, descends into the lake, offers picturesque views of the lake and Greenbo Dam and follows forest paths. The E. Stevens 2 map of the refuges is located at a beautiful point overlooking the lake; the trail often runs along the lake shore, but not always.

There are sixteen stops along the way that interpret the natural and cultruistic features that you will encounter. The path can be muddy in the rain, but despite the steep terrain and short distance it is relatively easy to walk. This long-distance cycle path follows a nature trail up a slope, then winds through a valley and brings you back to the starting point.

On the hiking trail you can go horseback riding and mountain biking, and guides are available at the lodge reception. I ask you to return your travel book after your hike and buy a travel guide for your trip.

Spring brings warblers, thrushes, woodpeckers and waterfowl to Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, a popular destination for birdwatchers and hikers.

In summer, you can see a variety of colourful songbirds, and during the autumn season, numerous migratory birds cross the park. Winter is the time of year when sparrows, finches and falcons are seen, and there are long-distance cycle paths where you can see songbirds and woodpeckers.

This offers great bird watching, whether you are looking for kingfishers or seabirds or just want to take a quiet walk along the lake shore. In summer, sit in a rocking chair on the lodge's veranda and watch a pleasant bird - watch ruby-red larynxes and robins and hear the chatter of cats.
