About Janes Island State Park

The original islanders were native to Annemessex, and Janes Island State Park consists of two distinct areas. Some parts are accessible only by boat, but there are accessible sections on the mainland with cabins and tents.

Most waterways are protected from wind and currents and offer ideal conditions for beginners and experienced paddlers. Maryland State Park is a natural paradise for canoeists with few traces of civilization. For more information, please visit the official website for more information about Janes Island and the other state parks in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Prehistoric cultures inhabited the land mass that later became Janes Island before Tangier Sound turned into a freshwater river and estuary rich in shellfish. Sea levels were much higher than today and mammoth, mastodon, horse and bison roamed Somerset County, Maryland. The Paleo-Indians settled on the island in the late Bronze Age, about 4,000 years ago. Historical artifacts found along the coast of Jane Island provide an insight into the lives of these mammals and the mammals they hunted.

In this way, the native people of Janes Island practiced the same practices as the modern aquariums that survive along the coast of Chesapeake Bay.

Cabins are available all year round, but must be reserved in advance, and cabins can only be cabins with a minimum of two people per cabin and a maximum of four people.

Five - camper cabins are also available, and there are four - campers per cabin with a minimum of two people per cabin and a maximum of four people. Pitches can be used as tents and campers and are available during the day, overnight or weekly.

A boat ramp and 25 boat moorings are available to campers for a minimum fee, reservations can be made at the park office. Canoes and kayaks can also be rented for $5 per day, $10 per week or $25 per month for all day use.

A picnic area with 25 tables for barbecues is available, and there are two picnic pavilions that can be reserved. The park is located in Somerset County near Crisfield and is accessible from routes 1, 9 and 2 in the town of Cranbury.
