About Saint Marys River State Park

The park is located on the banks of the St. Mary's River watershed in the town of Saint Marys, Maryland. The park has a variety of forest and field paths and has shady fields and fields of wild flowers. Besides these varieties, there are also many different plant and animal species to be found.

St. Mary's River State Park is divided into two areas, the locations 1 and 2, a map of these areas is available. This area covers 250 hectares of St. Mary's Lake and looks over the river and into the city of Saint Marys, Maryland and the city of Baltimore.

It has become a popular freshwater fishing experience and is located on the eastern shore of St. Mary's Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Maryland. Several species of fish live in and around the lake, including bluefish, perch, trout, redfish, whitefish and blackbird. The lake has been designated as a trophy perch lake and as such special fisheries rules may enter into force.

Several different tribes occupied the area at different times, including Indians, Europeans, Africans, Indians, Italians, Americans and Europeans. Many of the names used for the villages along the river are still used today, and items left by these people have been found in the State Park and on the banks of St. Mary's Lake. There is evidence that the Indians lived in this area for at least 2000 years before the arrival of Europeans and Americans.
