About Gambrill State Park

Gambrill State Park began when Frederick County's renowned conservationists bought a piece of land on Catoctin Mountain and donated it to the city of Frederick to use as an urban mountain park. The city handed the land over to our state in the form of a state park, later called Gam Brill, after one of Maryland's leading advocates for the preservation of the state's natural resources. Gambrills State Park and its adjacent park are both Maryland State Parks (for more information visit the official website).

Camping is allowed if there is a modern wash house with showers and hot water, and each campsite can accommodate up to 30 family units. The park also offers four camper huts and the senior rate is only valid on Sundays, holidays and Thursdays.

The High Knob area offers three units that can be rented from April to October. The building can accommodate up to 75 people and has a kitchen designed for cooking and serving food. Balconies and tea rooms offer stunning views, while huge stone fireplaces dominate the interior. Gambrill State Park offers a variety of camping options, including campgrounds, cabins and tents.

For those who want to hike and observe nature and wildlife, there are 13 km of forest trails.

Leash - Pets are allowed along the route, but pets are not allowed in picnic areas or tea rooms. Along the trails you can admire wildlife such as wolves, coyotes, foxes, deer, elk, bears and other wildlife.

During the summer season, nature walks and evening campfire programs are regularly organized. Nature Lodge is located in the High Knob area, and timetables can be viewed at various points in the park.

Take I-270 to Frederick, which merges with US Route 15, and continue on Route 40 and keep right. Continue south on Route 30 until you come back onto the freeway at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 35.

Follow the park road for 1 km to the campsite, then turn left onto route 20 and follow route 35 for 3 km before reaching the campsite at the top of the hill, about 1 / 2 km from the campsite.

From Baltimore, take I-70 to West Frederick and follow Route 40 to Gambrill State Park, then follow it for two miles to the campsite on top of the hill, one mile from the campsite.
From Pennsylvania, take US-15 to South Frederick and take the Route 40 West Exit and turn right onto Gambrill Park Road (above). From Baltimore, take I-70 to West Frederick and follow it for two miles to a campground on the top of the hill, one mile away.
