About Washington Monument State Park
The Washington Monument in State Park is the first monument erected to our country's father, George Washington. In 1827, the citizens of Boonsboro dedicated a sturdy stone tower to our first president, which remains one of the oldest monuments in the state.
During his early years as a surveyor, Washington traveled with his wife, the first lady of Anne Arundel County, Mary Ann Washington, to western Maryland and western Maryland.
The Appalachian Trail winds through the park and passes the foot of the monument, and there are youth groups and campgrounds on the reserve. The parkland offers views of the Cumberland Valley, which is a migratory bird flight path. Bird lovers conduct a census of migratory falcons and eagles in and around the monuments every year.
