About Savoy Mountain State Forest

The Savoy Mountain Forest makes it easy to leave everyday life behind, and it is one of the best places in the state for hiking and camping.

K kilometres of forest trails invite you to relax during the season and can be rented all year round. Spectacular natural phenomena are the floating peat islands and their waterfalls, which plunge deep into the abyss before finally plunging into a clear pool below into another abyss. In the distance, there is a quiet spot for fishing, picnics and swimming, as well as spectacular views of the Savoy mountain forest and its surroundings.

The office hours at the campsite are from 9 am to 9 pm and during the regular camping season from 7 pm to 10 pm and from 11 am to 5 pm.

Remember that you are in bear country and you should take appropriate precautions with your food to avoid attracting bears. Never physically throw anything at a bear, but do not cause physical harm to the bear or other animals.

The Savoy Mountain State Forest is located in the Hoosac Mountain Range in northwest Massachusetts, just north of the capital of the state of Boston, Massachusetts.

The Hoosac Range is an extension of the Green Mountains of Vermont and is the first mountain barrier to be encountered in the western Connecticut River Valley. The "Hoosac" is derived from an Algonquin word meaning "place of the stones" and "hooac," a reference to a village in New Hampshire.

In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built a new concrete dam to replace the old dam and reforested the abandoned farmland with spruce and blue spruce. When the tunnel was completed, the railroad workers left the area, but the city of Florida and Savoy brought a population boom. Many young people from the cities left the area to join the westbound train and work in the factories of New York City, New Jersey and other cities.

Apple trees scattered around the campsites are only a reminder of this agricultural history.
