About Castlewood State Park

A trip to Castlewood State Park provides visitors with a first glimpse of the area's glorious past. At the same time, the surrounding open spaces and picturesque views of New York City offer a peaceful escape from urban life.

Today the history of this former resort is preserved and the park stretches for almost five kilometres, extending on both sides of the Meramec. Every year, thousands of St. Louis residents travel to the Castlewood area to celebrate with water fun, dancing and clubhouse parties.

It covers much of the old resort area, including the grand staircase that once led revellers to the big hotels and clubs. While the hotel and club have disappeared, the staircase and attractions in the region remain intact.

The River Scene Trail leads up the majestic limestone cliffs that rise above the river. Under the trees of the floodplain forest, at a depth of 250 feet, on the banks of a river, trees native to the floodplains and forests stand.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch as you stroll through the meadows along the spring - fed by pine streams or fish for bluefish, white mullets and catfish in the cool waters of the Meramec. The possibilities are endless and there is no choice, the choice is yours.

At the end of Kiefer Creek Road, at the entrance to Castlewood State Park, there is a concrete boat station, and entry fees are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 5.

When the river has actually reached the ramp, boats can start at any time, but there are times when the water level is low. Due to the large sandbanks at the foot of the ramps, it is recommended to start as soon as possible. The ramp is closed when it reaches or exceeds its maximum water level of 2,000 feet or when there is no time for a lower water level. Boats can only take off when the river reaches at least 1,500 feet of water and no more than 3,200 feet.

There are several kilometers of river landscape in the park, but the river reaches its maximum water level of 2,000 feet. For more information, please call the parking office at 1-888-543-6200 or call 911 or the toll-free number on the website.

The fish common to the lower Meramec River include long-toothed bass, bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna and whitefish. There is a large river bank carved into the shore and a small stream that provides shelter for these fish.

There are statewide regulations and licensing requirements, the rules are in the Missouri Wildlife Code. For the spotted bass in the lower Meramec, special limits have been set for the spotted bass and whitefish cover in Castlewood State Park.
