About Guilford Lake State Park

Guilford Lake State Park is one of the most popular parks in the state of New Hampshire with a population of about 2,000 people. The gently undulating terrain in this area offers visitors to the park peaceful rest all year round.

Guilford Lake is located on a glaciated plateau in the Ohio region, and parts of the Appalachian Prealps were overrun by glaciers that invaded Ohio more than 12,000 years ago. The rock material in this area originated 300 million years ago from deposits in streams and swamps.

Eventually, the glacier's advances blocked the water flow from the mountains to the lake and river, and finally into the valley below.

The water was formed by huge chunks of ice that broke off from the retreating glacier and melted into the basin. The reservoir that Guilford Lake has seized is extremely swampy, suggesting that it may be a remnant of a natural glacial lake. Natural lakes have been a feature of glaciated landscapes for thousands of years, though most of Ohio is very small and has been turned into swamps and swamps.

The park attracts migratory birds in autumn and spring and also provides an excellent habitat for birds of prey such as owls, bald eagles and other birds of prey. Other wildlife common to the area include white deer, black bears, coyotes, lynxes, foxes, raccoons, squirrels, elks, pheasants, ducks, turkeys, geese, birds, bats, reptiles and amphibians, as well as other birds.

Morgan and his 2,000 robbers traversed the entire width of the state, from west to east, before he was finally caught. The most famous robbery in US history, the Great Depression, ended with the arrest in New York of John Morgan, one of America's most notorious robbers.

Guilford Lake was built by a private company in the late 1930s and early 1940s as part of an ambitious project. The canal itself would be 73 miles long and would require the construction of more than 1,000 miles of canals, bridges, and other infrastructure. Before it could be completed, however, it had to be built on the banks of the river.

The park is named after E.H. Gill, who was chief engineer of the sewerage company for several years. The road through the current park, known as Gill-Ford, was built in the late 1930s and early 1940s as part of the Guilford Lake Project.

When the canal period came to an end, the adjacent landowners broke the embankment and used the lake bed as farmland. The state bought the land in 1927 with the intention of rebuilding the reservoir, and in 1932 a new dam was completed by the Nature Conservation Department.

Finally, it was transferred to the Department of Parks and Recreation of the ODNR under the management of development.

In 1949, it was one of the first areas designated as Ohio State Parks, and in 1952, the state's first national park. There are campsites with up to 42 electric pitches, offering shady and sunny spots for camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking, canoeing, kayaking and other activities. On the northwest side of the lake there is a small campsite with picnic area, picnic tables and picnic chairs. There are campsites for two to four-person families and single-family houses available, as well as some picnic areas.

Facilities include a bathhouse, changing rooms and showers, with showers for adults and children, as well as showers and toilets.

Boat rental is possible in a private marina on the south side of the lake, and there is a launch pad with seasonal moorings. Boats with engines over ten horsepower are allowed on the lake, boats with less than ten horsepower can be sailed in the park.

Guilford Lake is a good place to catch perch, bluethroat, cappie and catfish, but a valid Ohio fishing license is required. There are shady picnic areas with tables and barbecues and shelters on the lake, which are run according to the motto "first come, first served."
