About Caesar Creek Gorge State Nature Preserve

The main feature of the reserve is the gorge, which consists of rocks formed by large meltwater glaciers, revealing Ordovician limestone schist, rich in fossils. The steep walls rise 180 feet above the river, and the stream flows through it at a speed of about 1.5 miles per hour.

The stream and its banks support a wide variety of plants and animals, and the excellent water quality shows this. More than two miles of Caesar Creek flow through the reserve, with a maximum flow rate of about 1.5 miles per hour.

The reserve also includes a wide range of habitats, ranging from successively cultivated fields to heavily forested slopes, grasslands and prairies. The floodplain is covered with lush herbaceous flora and along the banks of Caesar Creek and its tributaries you can find a variety of prairies and species.

A forest area managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation is an example of good use of the floodplain and contributes to maintaining the stability of the coast. It provides a natural habitat for many bird species, reptiles and amphibians, as well as birds of prey. Adjacent to the nature reserve is a covered bridge over Caesar Creek and its tributaries, the Caesar Canyon Bridge.

Take state road Rte 73 from I-71 From the west, go onto Corwin Rd and onto the east side of the road, there is a sign on the west side. It is located at the southeast corner of Caesar Canyon Road and Caesar Creek Road, south of I-71.
