Several reservoirs and more than 700 miles of streams provide excellent fishing opportunities, and Congress has designated 87 miles along the Allegheny River to protect the river and its tributaries and other waterways.

There are hundreds of undeveloped islands, including seven wild islands, which are located along this stretch of river. Considering these unique ecosystems in a peaceful, undisturbed environment provides a unique opportunity for outdoor recreation and also for the general public. Allegheny National Forest is located in the rugged highlands of northwestern Pennsylvania and borders several metropolitan areas, including Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh International Airport and the city of Pittsburgh and its suburbs.
