About Elk State Forest

The Elk State Forest, located mainly in Elk and Cameron counties, covers over 200,000 hectares and is home to licensed hunting and fishing and a wide variety of wildlife. The Elk State Forest takes its name from the moose that once thrived in the area, and Pennsylvania's only moose here is in a small wooded area, about 1,500 square miles.

The state's forests are delimited by the Elk State Forest border on the north and south sides of the main road, and the border markings are complemented by wooden signs on the main roads.

The Elk Forest covers more than 4,500 square kilometres, including beech, sycamore, birch and black cherry. The first wood removed from the district was bebe, a white pine that served as a mast. From 1865 to 1872, the finest white pines in the country were brought to Sterling Run and then to the Elk State Forest.

The Elk State Forest takes its name from the moose that once thrived in the area and is home to the only moose in Pennsylvania. The Elk State Forest, located mainly in Elk and Cameron counties, covers 200,000 hectares and is home to a large number of wildlife species.

The State Forestry Commission has a number of wooden signs which complement the border markings on the main roads and a wooden sign at the entrance.

The forest in the Elk district consists of a variety of trees, including beech, sycamore, birch and black cherry. The first wood removed from this area was white pine, which served as a mast. When pine stocks became scarce, hemlock logs prices rose as tanneries (which used bark only in the past) began to market it as sawn timber. Between 1865 and 1872, some of the country's finest white pines were converted into sterling.

Sawmills and timber stores were built across the county, and the logs that came from the huge hemlock population were caught in rafts and driven into the Sennemahone National Forest and the Elk State Forest. In 1872, the last raft left Elk County, ending the era of HeMLock control.

The old, growing forest in the area disappeared when loggers felled some young trees, and the felling area was further altered by a huge wildfire that destroyed the remaining young trees.

Originally designated a forest reserve, the area was bought to restore the forest, which had been almost wiped out by deforestation and slash-and-burn. It was purchased by D.R. Fullterton on May 31, 1900 and is one of the first public lands in the U.S. Forest Service's Elk State Forest. Elk State Park has more than 1,000 acres of forest with over 1.5 million trees.

The Peace Army of 1933 was recruited to combat the destruction and erosion of the nation's natural resources. From 1933 to 1941, men from nine camps carried out many projects in the Elk State Forest. The Wayside Memorial in Spring, located on the west side of Elk State Park in the Elk National Forest, will be preserved for public use in memory of these faithful men. Eight C & C / C firefighters lost their lives when they were trapped on a steep slope by a fast-moving wildfire.

The two main routes are the Bucktail Path and the Quehanna Trail, both bounded by Elk State Park and the Elk National Forest National Wildlife Refuge.

The humpback whale starts in Sizerville State Park and stretches south about 30 miles to the village of Sinnemahoning. The trail leads through northern deciduous and oak forests and can be hiked in short sections if desired. It is a pleasant experience for beginners and advanced hikers who can either walk a short section or as long as you want.

The Quehanna Trail is located in the southern part of Cameron County and runs for 30 miles through the Moshannon State Forest. The forest is surrounded by trees, grasses, shrubs and other vegetation, as well as a large number of birds.
