About Colleton State Park

The 35 hectare park was created in the early 1930s as a road park by the Civil Conservation Corps as part of the first phase of its construction.

Colleton is located on a stretch of river designated as an official canoe and kayak trail, which takes paddlers on an 8-mile loop along the Colleton River and its tributaries. The park hosts a river festival, which offers guided canoeing, canoeing, kayaking and other activities for all ages. Guests also have the opportunity to enjoy a day of fishing, boating, camping, picnics, hiking, fishing and much more in the park.

Colleton State Park was developed under the New Deal program, which was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The programme is designed to create jobs while meeting national conservation and leisure needs by creating public parks, recreation areas and other public facilities.

Within the park are some of the buildings and facilities built by the CCC in the 1930s, such as the Colleton County Courthouse, the South Carolina State Library and the State Museum. In addition to the State Park and other public facilities, it also houses a number of other historic buildings built and operated by the CCC during this period.
