About Pocahontas State Park

Pocahontas State Park is a national park in the US state of New York and is located in a wildlife management area. Swift Creek is the park's main source of water and an important source of drinking water for many residents.

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), it is one of the oldest public parks in the United States and the only one in New York. The area was renamed Pocahontas State Park in 1990 and is working under a cooperation agreement with the Department of Forestry. In 1989, a new master plan jointly funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Chesterfield County included plans to cater for the large urban population around the park. To make it more accessible to residents and visitors, the National Park Service donated facilities to Virginia State Parks that can be used as wildlife management areas or for recreational purposes.

Today, the entire area is operated as Pocahontas State Park, and the park is undergoing extensive renovations to expand and modernize its facilities.

Legend has it that Pocahontas and Captain John Smith saved their lives when they were captured by the Powhatan Confederacy. Later she married John Rolfe and travelled with him to London, where she died of smallpox. The park is named after her, as is Chief Pow hatan, and the park honours her with its name.

The Aquatic Recreation Center swimming pool will open for the first time ever in Pocahontas State Park on July 1, 2016. Group cabins and lodge guests receive free swimming while they receive a reduced swimming rate; details can be found on the entry page. Under no circumstances will swimming be refunded, but if you stay at a campsite, you are not allowed to swim in the pool.

A valid Virginia fishing license is required and must be purchased prior to arrival at the park. During the day only, you can enjoy Swift Creek and Beaver Lake; no electric motors are allowed, gas powered boats are prohibited, and no private boats can be used in or out of Swift Creek and Lake.

The seven shelters in the park can be rented for $5 a day or $10 a week for a total of $25 a year.

Rowing boats, kayaks, canoes, rafts and kayaks can be rented in all seven accommodation units of the park.

The property can be rented daily from 8 am until nightfall, and the rental price does not include parking fees. The shelter is open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm, but parking is not included in the rental price.

Then the cancellation fee applies for the first day of your stay and then for the second day, the third day and so on until the end of the day.

The Pocahontas State Park offers numerous hiking and cycling trails that wind through the surrounding forest. The park also has a single lane bike path and there is also horse riding (see horse rental above). In the park there are also a number of horse riding trails, as well as horse riding trails and a network of hiking trails.

Take I-95 to Exit 61 and head east on Beach Road to Exit 67 to the Pocahontas State Park parking lot on the west side of the park. Take I / 95 Exit 61, head west to Beach Road, then south on Beach Road, head east to Park Road, then north on Park Drive.
