About York River State Park

York River State Park is located 11 miles west of Williamsburg and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the surrounding coastal estuary.

York River State Park serves as a model for Virginia's state parks to develop a resource management plan. The park is focused on preserving the York River and its associated marshes, wetlands and estuaries, while providing access to a wide range of wildlife, natural resources and recreational opportunities. This park is known for its unique ecosystem, where fresh and salt water meet to create a habitat rich in marine and plant life. The natural resources of these parks make them one of the state's most popular destinations for kayaking, canoeing, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.

York River State Park takes its name from the fact that it is part of York River, one of the most important waterways in Virginia. Croaker's Landing, located in the park, is an archaeological site that has been included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Known for its early history as Taskinas Plantation, it was a public tobacco warehouse where local farmers stored their crops for shipment to England. The remains of a wooden barrier road from this time are still visible at low tide at Taskins Creek. The park was opened at the beginning of the 20th century to preserve the unique environment of the country, which was so important for the earliest history of our state.

At Croaker Landing you reach the mouth of the York River where there are two licensed piers, one on the east and one on the west. The jetty does not require a saltwater license, but fishing boats on land must have a Virginia saltwater fishing license. Both jetties have license plates with the name of their owner, but the jetty is not approved under the Virginia State Fish and Wildlife Act.

The parking and storage fees for the fishing jetties are necessary at any time, but can be purchased by calling 1 - 800 - 933-PARK.

Canoes and kayaks can be rented along the river, but motor boats are only allowed on the river and rental boats have tow motors. No fishing is required on Taskinas Creek, where catfish and white perch live.

Guided canoeing and kayaking tours start at the Visitor Centre, and visitors to the park can also learn about the ecology of the salt marshes on a guided tour of the York River State Park.

In the visitor centre you can rent kayaks, canoes, paddles, paddle boards and other kayaking equipment for use in the ponds.

Fishing is excellent in all three areas of the park, and freshwater anglers can find blue- and white-mouthed bass at Woodstock Pond.

Only rental boats are allowed in the ponds, but boats can be rented seasonally at the pond, and a Virginia fishing license is required. Boats can also be sailed in York River State Park, with a required Virginia fishing license.

During the hunting season, the park is closed to all other visitors except for special events such as deer and turkey hunting.

The three picnic accommodations overlooking the picturesque marshes of the York River can be reserved through the Reservation Center. During the hunting season, the park is closed to all visitors except for special events such as deer and turkey hunting.
