About Occoneechee State Park

Occoneechee State Park is located on Buggs Island Lake, also known as John H. Kerr Reservoir. The park has an 18.1 km long hiking trail, which allows guests to enjoy the picturesque view of the lake, as well as a variety of waterfalls and other natural features.

In 1944, the Commonwealth of Virginia began leasing the land to the US Army to allow for outdoor recreation. The land in Occoneechee State Park remains leased by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Occoneechee Indians have lived for more than 2,000 years in the area of what is now Occ, one of the most popular recreational areas in Virginia.

In 1676, a group of Henrico County men were persuaded by William Bacon, one of Virginia's most famous settlers, to destroy the Occoneechees. Bacon's actions were approved by Governor Berkeley and most Virginia residents, but his attack only led to the slaughtering of the Indians, who were perhaps the friendliest settlers in the Commonwealth. Almost 200 years after the attack on the Indians, William Townes had land on which to build a plantation on water.

In 1898 the property was set on fire and destroyed, but the garden design can still be seen in the park, as well as the remains of Townes' house and a few other buildings.

There are three boat moorings for motor boats, which invite you to swim and splash around and offer access to the two lakes of the park.

Call 1-800-933-PARK to obtain an annual ticket to start your boat or make a reservation at (1) 888-884-4357 for more information. You can also make a reservation online, by phone or in person at the park office or by calling 1-800-933-PARK for information on purchasing annual passes, launch boats and more.

Lake Gaston and its associated lakes and rivers are famous for the number and size of fish that can be found there. Both Virginia and North Carolina require a valid fishing license, but fish of all sizes and sizes, from small to large, are abundant in the park's waters.

The park has a variety of accommodations, such as two shelters, which can be rented every day from 8 am until sunset. The shelter's users can use the volleyball courts, and the park also has two picnic tables, a picnic area and volleyball court, as well as an outdoor swimming pool.

Parking fees are not included in the rental price, but then a cancellation fee is due (see above for details).

It has lighting as well as power outlets and is close to a playground, making it ideal for children. There is also a path that leads to the beautiful lake view, and there is a nearby playground in front of the park, which makes it ideal for children and families.

This accommodation is located on the left, just outside the visitor center and is accessible for disabled people. It has lighting as well as electrical outlets, is near a playground, horseshoe pit and toilets. With shelter 2, it can accommodate up to 125 people and has power outlets for a total of three hours per day.

A 3.1 km trail winds through the forest, past picturesque lake views and leads visitors to the terraced gardens of Old Plantation Park. The park also features a playground, a horseshoe pit, picnic tables, a picnic area and a water park.

The park is located on the east side of Route 58, just south of the city of Oconee, New Hampshire.

Take Route 58 to the South Hill exit and park in Old Plantation Park at the southern end of the city, about half a mile from the road.
