About Douthat State Park

Douthat State Park in Virginia has been named one of the 10 best parks in the nation by the National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. The district between Bath and Alleghany covers an area of about 2,500 acres (1.5 square miles) and is on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Douthat is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains and offers some of Virginia's most extraordinary landscapes. In addition, a 50-hectare lake offers swimming, boating and seasonal trout fishing. It was one of the original six Virginia State Parks that opened on June 15, 1936, and houses more than 2,500 acres (1.5 square miles) of land in State Park.

Douthat was one of six national parks planned by the Commonwealth in the early 1930s and was the first of a series of parks that are now part of the Virginia State Park System (VSPS). CCCs) to provide funds for the development of the park and to donate the land to the parks of today. The rest of the land was purchased by the General Assembly in 1933 with $50,000 in funds to purchase the park and in 1936 with a $1,500 grant from the state.

Between 1933 and 1942, the men cleared the paths and built the first of the park's four paths, a 1,000-foot-long system of paths. An estimated 600 men lived and worked at the Douthy facility, which was built on a 2,500-acre site on the south side of Dostat's main road.

The structures were decorated with hand-carved wooden handles, hinges and hand-forged iron fittings. The development and natural features of the park have remained practically unchanged since its creation.

Douthat has been recognized as a National Registered Historic District by the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1998, it was awarded the award for the best maintained and operated dam in the United States, and in 1999, it received the National Historic Landmark Award for its efforts to preserve the historic monument.

The cabins have a view of the water and weekly rentals start Saturday and Sunday at $1,500 for a one-day stay or $2,000 for two days.

The cottages are rustically furnished and have no air conditioning or heating, but each cottage has air conditioning and heating. Campers and cabin guests should show valid ID upon request and be aware that you must bring your reservation number and booking confirmation with you at check-in.
