About Beartown State Park

Beartown State Park is a 100-acre nature reserve located on the west side of Boston, Massachusetts, north of downtown Boston. The land was bought in 1965 after Ronald Keith Neal died in the Vietnam War with his wife and three children.

The development of the park was minimal to preserve the natural attractions in the area. The promenade allows easy access and signs along the waterfront give an insight into the ecology of these areas. However, basic facilities are available for the general public and visitors with special needs.

Beartown is known for its unusual sandstone rock formations that were formed during the Pennsylvanian period. The rock faces are filled with hundreds of eroded pits the size of two adult men holding hands and feet, and the size of a football field. Its overhanging cliffs, large boulders and other natural features have captured the imagination of most visitors. Open daily from April to October, this park is so close to visitors that you can contact the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (CDNR) and the State Park Service.

Ice and snow remain in the area for several months of the year, as well as in the winter months in winter and early spring.

In Beartown, you can see that forces of nature are at work, slowly breaking down even the largest rocks, then depositing them elsewhere and building new ones. Vegetation sends roots into crevices, and seeing the evidence of this process, one often has the chance to forget the hustle and bustle of modern life for a while.

Beartown is known for its unusual sandstone rock formations that were formed during the Pennsylvanian period. Many deep, narrow crevasses appear from above, like the streets of a small town, and are shaped by the forces of nature, such as wind, water, or even the wind itself.

The name "Bärensäut" was chosen because the inhabitants claimed that many caves - like rock holes - were created because of their proximity to the central business district of the city.

The rock faces are filled with hundreds of eroded pits, ranging from small enough to hold two adult men to large enough for a small child or even an adult woman. Ice and snow remain, and the overhanging rocks with their narrow crevasses have captured the imagination of most visitors.

Vegetation sends roots into the crevices, and vegetation sends roots out of those crevices. When you see the testimonies of this process, you often have the chance to forget the hustle and bustle of modern life for a while.
