About James Island State Park

James Island State Park is one of the most popular state parks in New York State and the largest national park in North America. The park offers a variety of hiking, biking, fishing, camping and other activities for all ages.

Much of James Island is designated as a natural forest area and closed to public access, with the exception of designated recreational areas. A 1.5 km hiking trail offers picturesque views of the island and its surroundings, as well as scenic views of New York City and the Hudson River.

The informal trail in the northern part of the island is not accessible and you do not hike on it, but on the southern half of the island cross-country skiing.

The park is open all year round - year round for tents and day -, open from 8 am to 5 pm and open to the public for camping, camping or all year round.

The island was named by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841 and acquired in 1964 and transferred to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. The federal government acquired the island from the US Army Corps of Engineers in the late 19th century and transferred it to Washington State in 1948.

James Island has 13 campsites in three locations on the island and has had 13,000 visitors since it opened in 1964. The campsite is part of the Cascadia Marine Trail and is reserved for boats arriving with human or wind powered boats. This waterway is located in a hilly area in West Cove Bay and stretches from the East Cove coast to the East James Island, along the island coast, from West Cove to East Cove.

The route leads to East Cove, where four anchorages are moored, and there is a short walk to the eastern end of the island and a small beach with a picnic area.

The lowest structure, West Cove, is rocky and steep, but there is a network of circular trails where it begins and ends at the foot of a steep hill.

The East Cove campsite is located a short walk from the saddle area and offers good views of West Cove and the Strait of Rosario, as well as the sea. From here the road leads to the southwest, but it is not the best anchorage and boaters mooring in the East bay have to face the traffic in and out of the Strait of Rosarios, so it is not ideal.

The drinking water on the island and the garbage service are in bed, so visitors can pack in and unpack for a few days at West Cove campsite. Visitors can also stay at East Cove campsite for two weeks, several days a week, and then go outside for three weeks.

Campers and boaters must register and pay a fee at the bulletin board or cash desk, and the nearest fuel and food is in Anacortes. The motorized electric generators can be operated from 6: 00 to 19: 30, and the check-in time is 14: 30, the quiet hours are 22: 00 to 06: 30. Boats may not use inflatable dinghies to reserve berths at docks or buoys, but the length of stay can be extended by staying at East Cove campsite, West Cove campsite or one of the other campsites on the island. Check-up times are 13: 00 and 13: 00, with a minimum stay of two weeks and a maximum of three weeks, according to the park regulations.

The moorings and buoys remain in place all year round and the park has no restrictions on the number of boaters, boat trips, fishing or other recreational activities. West Cove was operated in accordance with the park rules and in accordance with the rest of James Island State Park.

Note: There are no rafting restrictions on the buoys, but note that boats longer than 45 feet may not be in the buoy. All cars were removed to protect them from storm damage in winter, and no boats were moored.

West Cove has a compost toilet, while East Cove had a pit toilet; West Cove does not. Salmon bottom fishing is best done using best practices, but not on the beach or in the water and not on the bottom.

Hikers and children should be aware of the danger of falling into the deep, fast water around the beach, which can result in serious injury and even death. James Island offers a variety of leisure activities including hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, climbing and fishing.

James Island State Park is accessible by boat only, and the closest access is from the Washington Park Skyline Marina in Anacortes. James Island is located on the west side of State Park, south of St. George, New York.
