About Matia Island State Park

Matia Island State Park is a state park in New Hampshire, USA, about 30 miles north of Boston. The island is one of the largest in the United States and the second largest in North America.

The park offers good fishing and diving in the waters around the island, and boaters have access to a wide range of recreational activities including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating, hiking, kayaking and rafting. The island is closed to the public for habitat and wildlife protection, but Matia Island is a federal wildlife reserve and home to more than 100 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds of prey. It borders the states of New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont.

It is home to the oldest growing forest in the United States with a population of more than 1,000 species of trees and shrubs.

The park is open all year round - for picnics and camping from 8 am to 6 pm and for fishing, camping and boating all year round, for tents and berths.

There are many interesting rock formations on the island, consisting of sloping sandstone beds and conglomerates. The wavy caves and the honeycomb-shaped rocks are particularly interesting, representing some of the most interesting formations of the park, such as the "Honeycomb Cave" at the top.

Mata has many meanings in Spanish, but most of them have to do with lush plant growth, and it is believed that Matia refers to the name of a woman. Captain Eliza of the Spanish expedition of 1792 named the island "Isle de Mata," and in 1954 the US Coast Survey named a ship after her, the "Matia."

Rolfe Cove on Matia Island offers picturesque views of the island and its surroundings, as well as views from the Cape Cod coast.
