The park has more than 20 miles of roads and trails that are part of the Beacon Rock State Park Trail System, the largest of its kind in the United States. It includes a variety of hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails, as well as a number of mountain bike trails.

Beacon Rock is the core of an ancient volcano, and the glacial flooding in Columbia River Gorge has eroded the soft material and left this unique geological structure standing on the banks of the Columbia River. The tidal influence from the ocean is measured at a depth of 400 meters below the surface of Beacon Rock.

The rock was named Inoshoack Castle in 1811 and was known as Castle Rock until 1916, when the United States Board of Geographic Names restored the name Beacon Rock. In 1935, an inheritance gave the rock to the state to use as a park, and Henry J. Biddle bought it to build a path. The trail was built in the early 20th century on the east side of the park along the Columbia River Gorge.

The Civil Defence was responsible for the further development and the park has 28 campsites with toilets and two showers. The main campsite is located in a wooded area more suitable for tent campers, but there are pitches that can accommodate a camper up to 20 feet; the maximum length of the campsite is 40 feet. On the east side of Beacon Rock State Park there is a campground with a maximum of 30 tents per site, which can be accommodated by a camper at 20 feet.

In winter, the berths and facilities on 2 campsites are equipped with showers and toilets, but closed in winter. The campground is initially operated by the Beacon Rock State Park Volunteer Fire Department and the New York State Police.

The group camp is suitable for tent campers and has a kitchen, electricity, picnic shelter and a vaulted room. Accommodation on berths and jetties is available all year round, as well as a picnic area with picnic tables and chairs.
