About Glendo State Park

Glendo State Park is located in one of Wyoming's historic areas, in the city of Glendo, Wyoming, north of Laramie, about 60 miles south of the state capital of Casper.

The Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians arrived in the 18th century, and the Oglala and Brule Sioux moved from South Dakota to eastern Wyoming, arriving in 1830. Spanish excavations, which indicate large areas of Aboriginal activity, are located just a few kilometres east of the reservoir.

Tipi rings and a variety of cultural artefacts were found in the area. Please remember that removing these artifacts is illegal for the Oglala and Brule Sioux and other tribes due to their cultural significance.

Although the area is now largely covered by water, it crosses the river and on closer inspection traces of historical paths can still be seen.

The best potatoes in northeastern Wyoming were once grown here, and the fertile soil was a lure for early farmers and ranchers.

Construction of the Glendo Dam began in 1954 and was completed in 1957. It is the largest dam in the United States and one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world.

The place is exposed to the wind and the ground is not very shallow, but it has a sheltered bay where boats can dock. The campsite has sheltered bays for the anchoring of boats, as well as a picnic area, picnic table and picnic tables.

Boat ties: boats can be tied up to three days in a row in the park, with access to the beach and access to the beach from the parking lot.

The boat ramp is a short seasonal ramp that is normally unusable in early July due to sinking water levels. Access to the lake from the mud bank is very narrow, please contact the park office for further information.
