The Dead Horse Ranch was bought by the Irish in the 1950s and opened to the public for the first time in 1953.

The story behind the park's name begins with the Irys family, who came to Arizona from Minnesota in the late 1940s to buy a ranch. When the family first saw the property, they saw a dead horse lying in a field, so they named it Dead Horse Ranch after the purchase. They looked at it and the answer was one of those dead horses, and that's how it looked.

After two days of cattle raising, Papa Ireys asked the children which ranch they liked best, and while they were at the ranch they found a large dead horse lying on the side of the road.

The Irys family chose the name Dead Horse Ranch and made it a condition of the sale when the park was acquired by Arizona State Parks in 1973. The dead horse was offered for sale to the Arizona Department of Parks and Recreation along with Deadhorse Ranch Ranger Station in exchange for a $1,000 bail.
