About Bellevue State Park

Acquired by the State of Delaware in 1976, the park now covers 328 hectares, and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation maintains the historic charm of Bellevue while offering many recreational opportunities. Mr. du Pont Jr. surrounded his home with a riding stable and a picturesque pond surrounded by woods and fields overlooking the Delaware River.

Hiking and jogging are popular activities during the season, and nearby exercise trails provide a refreshing workout. A fishing pond filled with perches, catfish and sunfish is surrounded by nearby forests, where you can refresh yourself on nearby trails.

Hiking trails invite you to explore other parts of the estate, and those who prefer cycling can take a leisurely tour on asphalt or dirt roads.

Discover how William H. du Pont Jr. transformed the estate from a Gothic chateau into a mansion.

Guided tours of the castle are offered regularly, and the Bellevue's rooms are available for private tours as well as for public tours of the house and grounds.

The Bellevue is also a delightful picnic spot, and the hunting barn offers picnic areas for indoor reservations. Set up a table in the park or lay a blanket on the lawn to enjoy an old fashioned dinner al fresco. The gazebos can be reserved for large groups, or the hunting barn for small groups.

In June and August you can enjoy evening concerts and performances in the Bandshell, and in autumn hay rides without reservation are great fun. The leisure activities are of high quality and offer a varied program for visitors of all ages. Summer theme camps educate and entertain children, as well as summer camps for adults and children.

Bellevue is really a park for all seasons, and outdoor skating is also allowed, provided conditions permit. In winter, Bellevue offers ice skating, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, as well as a variety of other outdoor activities, such as hiking and cycling.

The tennis facilities are excellent, with eight outdoor clay courts, and professional tennis players are available for lessons. The pro shop is stocked with your favorite equipment and Bellevue also acts as one of the best public tennis courts in the state and nation.
