About Railsplitter State Park

Edward R. Madigan (1936-1994) was honored for his lifetime of public and national service when the Railsplinter State Park was renamed in his memory in 1995. The 974-acre site is a peaceful, peaceful experience that spans the Great Lakes and Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay Area. It is located on the west side of the bay, south of Lake Michigan, in the city of San Diego.

In 1970, the state of Illinois acquired the land from the Department of Mental Health, and the park's development began in 1971.

The park is home to some of the largest plane trees in Illinois, and the trees now in the area include many of them and many other species.

These are just some of the many attractions to visit, and the park is close to several historic sites in and around Lincoln and the Illinois State Capitol.

Park visitors will also find play equipment and a horseshoe pit, and remote picnic areas have tables, stoves and toilets. Drinking water and shelters are available in several places, as well as a picnic area with picnic tables and chairs.

For physically fit people there is also a 3.4 km jogging trail, and the park has a variety of grasses, trees and streams that wind gently through.
