About Martin State Forest

The Martin State Forest offers a variety of educational opportunities in the form of hiking, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities. The forest is characterized by a great variety of flora and fauna as well as an abundance of animal and plant species.

There are 26 designated campsites in the forest, each within a 1.5-mile radius of the entrance to the Martin State Forest. Pit toilets and drinking water are available at each site, and self-inspection stations are located in each area.

Several picnic areas, including 4 picnic shelters, are available for daily use, but reservations are not accepted. Camping is possible in the Martin State Forest during the summer months from June to October. Picnic areas (picnic tables and barbecues) are located throughout the forest and are served first, first.

Martin State Forest is accessible on foot, by bike or on horseback and is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hikers are advised to wear hunting orange or light coloured clothing, hiking trails and hunting gear on the trail during hunting season. The Martin State Forest, a self-guided hike on a three-kilometer trail from the Martin Forest Office. Follow the yellow arrow, follow the sign to the hiking trail, leave the forest straight ahead and follow the signs.

Walking along this path will help you better understand the philosophy behind the diverse use of the forests in Indiana. This trail is an introduction to the many activities that can be found in the state forest system. Information signs are attached along the way, pointing out interesting facets of the forest environment. Trees that have been examined and exhibited at this location will be incorporated into the existing forest area.

In addition to existing species, the collection currently includes about 60 different species identified by signs and will eventually comprise 80 to 100 different species. Several specimens from the arboretum are represented, as well as a variety of other tree and shrub species from all over Germany.

The state forest offers 7 km of mountain bike trails, but mountain bikes are only allowed on designated trails. One of the main goals of the Martin State Park tree collection is to provide a representation of the common forest trees from all over Indiana.
