About Petoskey State Park

Petoskey State Park, at the northern end of Little Traverse Bay, covers 303 hectares and has beautiful sandy beaches along the bay. The park has two separate modern campsites: Tannery Creek has 98 campsites and the park's main campground, the Great Lakes Campground.

Originally declared Parkland (Pay Me Gwau) in July 1855 under an Indian treaty, much of the land was later assigned to the W.W. Rice Company.

In 1934, the city of Petoskey bought the land and renamed it "Petos keyeskey Bathing Beach." In 1934, it was bought and sold to the State of Michigan in April 1968. On May 21, 1969, the state was declared a land and in July 1970 the campsite opened its pitches to the first campers.

Petoskey stones and Michigan's official stones teem the shores and the mile - the long sandy beach is rich in a variety of animals including dogs, cats, birds, ducks and even a few birds.

Two hiking trails run through Petoskey State Park and an asphalt bike path runs through State Park, which connects it to Harbor Springs, a short walk from the beach.

The Portage Trail winds through a very diverse terrain where nature lovers can find various plant and animal species. The Old Baldy Trail leads up a flight of stairs to a stable dune, which is one of the park's attractions. When you climb the dunes, the view over the bay is breathtaking and it is also a great place for a picnic.

Fishing, jet skiing and water skiing are popular activities in the area and many nearby lakes also have boat moorings. Harbor Springs in Petoskey has several launches that provide access to Little Traverse Bay, and there are boat launchers throughout the park. The park is located in Harbor Spring, which is known for its scenic views of the bay and Great Lakes.

Fish brood Oden is a short drive from the park and is one of the most popular trout fishing destinations in Michigan. If you're interested in farming brown trout, you should first visit Fish Brut, a popular fishing spot in Petoskey State Park.
