About Sleeper State Park

Those who want to go hiking or skiing can use the well-maintained hiking trails or ski in the park. The pavilion can be rented for $5 per day or $10 per week for a year - 24 hours a day.

The park opened in 1925 as a landscaped park, but in 1927 the state acquired the property and named it Huron State Park. In 1944, the park was renamed in honor of the late Senator John H. O'Neill, who enacted the statute that created our state parking system.

The Sleeper Outdoor Center consists of a well-equipped kitchen, a picnic area, an outdoor dining room and a large recreational area with picnic tables.

Lake Huron is about 800 metres away and can be reached by a hiking trail or a short drive. The Sleeper Outdoor Center is located in a very remote, wooded part of the park, but nearby hiking trails offer miles of diverse recreational opportunities.

Families and small groups can rent individual cabins, or the entire complex can be rented in large groups. Safe toilets are available, but the dining room and toilet buildings are closed until the end of October. For more information about the Sleeper Outdoor Center and other accommodations, please contact the park for more details.

The day use area is a short walk from the campsite and includes a shaded picnic area and a gazebo that can be rented for group events. Along the route there are safe toilets, and the path leads to a variety of habitats and is directly accessible to campsites. The park's two-kilometre long and 2,000 square metre swimming pool offers relaxation, bathing and sunbathing.

Saginaw Bay is a great spot for fishing for perch, whales, salmon and sea trout and is available for canoes. A short drive from the park are the shores of Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes National Park and Recreation Area (GRRA).

Many rustic trails lead to the wildlife park for adventurous visitors, and many of the hiking and cross-country trails used also have access to many animal species that populate the forests and wetlands of the region.
