About White Mountain National Forest
On the northern central plateau of New Hampshire, the White Mountains National Forest is covered in forest and washed out by streams. It is one of the largest national forests in the United States and the second largest in New England. On the crests of the mountain range is the Presidential Range, which reaches its peak at 5,000 feet above sea level on the summit of Mount Washington. The mountains of Adams, Jefferson, Monroe and Madison also exceed more than 5,000 feet, as does Mt. Washington, the highest peak in North America.
The Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire runs through the White Mountains, including the 3,000-mile Appalachian Mountain Trail. Travel north on US Highway 93 from Boston to Boston and you will enter the woods at the intersection of US Route 1 and US-93, just north of the city of Concord.
