About Washington Crossing State Park

On December 25, 1776, the icy waters of the Delaware River provided the perfect backdrop for the opening of Washington Crossing State Park in Delaware County, Delaware.

On December 25, 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army landed in what is now Washington Crossing State Park after crossing the harsh winter river at night. Around the clock in the morning the battle for Trenton began, where the Hessian troops had been defeated in an unexpected attack. The battle was quickly followed by a series of skirmishes in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Delaware County. At the end of the first day of fighting, however, they seemed overwhelmed by hunger and cold and had little to celebrate.

Although originally preserved for its historical importance, the park is also known for its hiking trails and wildlife habitat. A large number of migratory birds use the gorge as a resting and nesting place, and numerous bird watching and bird watching routes have been established.

Among the most notable species are white and deer, red and shoulder falcons. The park has a wonderful variety of spring and summer wildflowers. The park offers a wide range of plants, including grasses, shrubs and trees, as well as many bird species, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

The battle followed quickly and around the clock in the morning they began their march to Trenton, where they were defeated in an unexpected attack by the Hessian troops. A few days before Christmas, the first day of New Year's celebrations in New York City, it seemed that hunger and cold were outstripping them, leaving them with little to celebrate Christmas with.
