The Bass River State Forest is one of the first forests acquired by the state of New Jersey. The lake, 67 hectares, was created in the 1930s and is the centre of recreational activities for the forest. The Staatswald am Bass offers hiking, cycling, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. The self-guided Absegami Trail, a 1.5 km long trail, includes wooden walkways and benches, as well as trails along the stream, river, creek bed, coast and beach.

Animals, birds, plants and pine carts are to be found, and the guide describes the establishment of the camp. The walk starts at the second parking lot on the beach, but for those who cross the section on the Pink Trail, there is a brochure.

The Absegami Nature Reserve is made up of an oak and pine forest surrounded by a wetland forest, where the Atlantic white cedar shares the canopy with the red maple and magnolia. This easy, well-marked path - marked with pink flames - runs along the coast, crosses a stream and crosses a wooded area that was once a bustling town. Part of the Batona Trail is maintained by the State Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (DNR) and the State Park Service.

The unique stunted forest ecosystem, locally known as the Pygmy Forest, is rare in the world and supports an extensive forest of pine and oak trees that can reach a crown height of only four meters when ripe. The area is also home to an endangered species, the broom berry, and New Jersey has one of the largest populations of this species in the United States and the world.

The Bass River State Forest is located on the north side of the Garden State Parkway, south of its exit to the New Jersey Turnpike. The exit is via the Garden State Parkway from the Jersey Shore Parkway at the southern end of New Brunswick and then to a parking lot near the exit.
