About Double Trouble State Park

Double Trouble State Park is one of the oldest and most popular state parks in the United States, and the location of this resource base provides a great opportunity to bring visitors to a unique combination of natural, cultural and recreational attractions. The park offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, cycling, canoeing, fishing, camping and hiking. There is a natural environment consisting of high quality Pinelands watersheds and a very well preserved historic village connected to the historic town of Double Trouble, a small village of about 1,000 inhabitants.

There is a contradictory story behind the name "Double Trouble" because of its proximity to the town of Double Trouble, the site of the original Double Trouble.

Early history attributes the name to Thomas Potter, who coined the word "double trouble" after spring rains washed out the dam twice in a season. Most of the usual legends revolve around a dam at Cedar Creek, but another colorful legend tells of local muskrats gnawing stubbornly at it, often leading to leaks. Such leaks solve the "Here's trouble! The alarm was raised, prompting workers to rush to fix the leak.

Regardless of the origin of the name, most sources suggest that the unusual title bears the beginnings of a cranberry industry. There is a 1.5 km self-guided trail, where natural and historical objects are described and interpreted. Hiking guides are available for both hiking trails and the historic village.

Originally a cranberry farm and packaging factory, the former corporate town of Double Trouble is a window into the past and present of the Pinelands industry. Double trouble was founded to sell wood and crushed products such as cranberries, but was later reestablished - as a production site for wood chips and other products.

Since the mid-17th century there have been several sawmills, and in 1995 the sawmill was restored.

The village consisted of a general shop, a school, a house and a small house, including a church, a school house and a post office, as well as a grocery store.

The park is covered with pine trees and the adjacent marshes and plateaus offer examples of plants characteristic of pine carts. Cedar Creek provides the water needed to grow cranberries, and the creek is an excellent creek for canoeing and kayaking.

Turn left onto County Route 618 (Veterans Boulevard) and turn left onto Manchester Boulevard, then right onto Western Boulevard before turning right again onto Western Blvd. Turn left off County Road 619 (Manchester Blvd) into the park and head south on the left side of the road until you turn onto CountyRoute 6 18 (Veterans Boulevard).
