About Nantahala National Forest
Nantahala National Forest is located in the mountains and valleys of southwestern North Carolina.
The 531,148 acres cover an altitude of 2,843 feet (6,943 meters) and comprise 5,31,148 acres, ranging from 1,000 feet to 3,500 feet, with an average altitude of 4,200 feet.
The forest is divided into three districts: Nantahala National Forest District 1, North Carolina (NC-1), Robbinsville, NC-2, and Cheoah National Wildlife Refuge District 3.
The district's name is derived from the Cherokee language, and Nantahala is a Cherokee word that means "land of the midday sun," referring to the Nantsha Gorge, where the sun does not reach the valley floor until noon.
The Nantahala National Forest was established in 1920 under the authority of the Weeks Act of 1911.
The law provided that national forests could acquire land to protect watershed areas, provide timber, and regulate the flow of navigable streams. Nantsha National Park has 600 miles of hiking trails, with more than 1,000 hectares of trails and trails for cycling, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the NANTAHALA National Forest, visitors can enjoy scenic beauty, scenic views, wildlife habitat and a variety of wildlife habitats.
