About Tiadaghton State Forest

Tiadaghton State Forest is one of twenty forest districts created to protect and manage Pennsylvania's forests. The exact meaning of "Tiadghton" is a mystery that could remain locked forever in the folklore of the Iroquois Indians. It is the name that the Mohawk Indians, the original inhabitants of this part of Pennsylvania, have given to the forest, the Pine Ridge State Park, and is home to a large number of native trees such as pines and pines.

Tiadaghton State Forest covers an area of about 1,000 square miles, most of which are in Lycoming County. A small portion covers the east and west sides of the state, as well as parts of Allegheny County and New York State.

The Black Forest Trail is a 42-kilometre-long hiking trail built by the Forest Service. It uses old wooden railroad tracks and footpaths to cross some of Pennsylvania's most spectacular areas. A hiking map and guide are available on the Tiadaghton State Forest website and the National Park Service (NPS) website. It follows a series of footpaths originally laid out by the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, and is followed by a number of other trails such as the Blue Ridge Trail and the Black River Trail.

The Pine Creek Trail was developed by the Bureau of Forestry on an abandoned railway line that runs parallel to Pine Creek. When completed, the route will extend to the coast of Tiadaghton State. Further information or a copy can be requested from the district office.

Cross-country skiing has become a popular winter activity in the Tiadaghton State Forest, especially along the Pine Creek Trail in the winter months. The route is mainly used by hikers, mountain bikers, skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and snowmobilers.

Tickets are available at the Tiadaghton State Forest Visitor Center or at any of the trailheads along the Pine Creek Trail. The trail is well maintained and marked with a hiking trail, signs and a sign with information about the hiking trails and activities available to visitors.

The Old Loggers Path is a 27 km (12 miles) trail that leads from the Tiadaghton State Forest Visitor Center to the Pine Creek Trailhead on the east side of the park. The footpath can be used for a variety of activities, such as hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking and snowboarding.

Loyalsock Trail is a 60-mile trail that starts at State Route 87 north of Mountoursville and ends at Tiadaghton State Forest Visitor Center in Laporte on US Route 220.
