About Big Pocono State Park

Big Pocono State Park is located in Monroe County in northeastern Pennsylvania and consists of two mountain peaks, Schenectady Mountain is home to the state's highest peak. From the summit, visitors can enjoy views of the Poconino Mountains, Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachians.

Big Pocono State Park is located on a property that belonged to Henry S. Cattell at the turn of the 20th century. The stone hut was built in 1908 by Cattell, who loved the view from the top of Camelback Mountain and knew many others who shared his love of the area. The facilities at Big Pocano State Park are maintained in collaboration with the Camelbacks Ski Corporation. This year the park will be closed for a few days due to the winter weather, but will reopen in spring if conditions permit.

The hut has been open for many years and is used as a shelter by everyone who wants it, from hikers, mountain bikers, skiers, snowboarders and snowshoe hikers to hikers.

The Big Pocono Fire Tower on the mountain is maintained by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry to detect fire activity in surrounding private and state forest areas. The tower is occupied only during the spring and fall season and is inaugurated as a historic building by the National Fire Tower Association.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission bought the area in 1928, 12 years after Cattell's death, and the resort later became Camelback Ski Corporation and became an important ski resort. In the 1950s, Big Pocono Skiing, Inc. was leased by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (PDCR) and Pennsylvania State Parks for commercial ski development.

The Cattell Hut served as the park's office and nature museum for many years, and the area was first opened to the public as Big Pocono State Park in 1953. The ski resort and facilities were acquired by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (PDCR) and Pennsylvania State Parks to develop the State Park on the top of the mountain.

The picnic area at the Cattell Hut has tables in an open setting, while the eastern and southern areas are in a wooded area. Both areas offer visitors great views of the surrounding countryside, and Big Pocono State Park has a variety of picnic spots as well as a number of hiking trails and trails.

The trail conditions vary from smooth surfaces with slight gradients to rocky, rocky and rocky trails with steep climbs and steep descents. Disabled people have access to one of the three hiking trails and a number of picnic areas.

In addition to the hiking trails, the three-kilometre-long south trail is also designated as a horse riding trail.
