About Poinsett State Park

Poinsett State Park is located in a remote area of the Sandhills, but still in the coastal plains. Poinsetts State Park is currently located near the still coastal plain in the southern part of the state of New York.

This unique location on the edge of a diverse terrain offers a variety of habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna. The 1,000-acre park also features hiking trails like the Palmetto Trail System, which connects to the adjacent Manchester State Forest. In the swamps of the park, there are turnips, a typical plant that thrives in the highland regions, and a species that is normally found in the Netherlands. This park was established in 1930 by the Civil Conservation Corps as part of its New York State Park System.

Five picnic huts are available for families and other group gatherings, and accommodations can be reserved for $25 to $38 per day. If accommodation is not reserved, guests can use it free of charge upon arrival. From Columbia, take Highway 378 - 76 to Sumter and take Exit 119 (Manning Exit) to Highway 261 until you see a sign to Poinsett.

The park is located on the south side of the Wateree River at the intersection of Highway 261 and Rd. Once you have crossed the Waterees River, turn onto Rd and drive to the top of a hill and continue on Highway 261 until you see a sign to Poinsett.

Exit 98 Camden Exit will take you from Highway 521 S to Sumter and then to Highway 261 and then to Wateree River Trail.
