About Fort Griffin State Park

Shackelford County has been recognized as the state of the country since 1935 and covers 506.2 hectares with a total area of 1.6 million square feet.

Many of the park's facilities were built by the Civil Defence (CCC) before it was opened to the public in 1938. The ruins include a partially restored bakery, a museum, an amphitheater and a number of other historic buildings. Perched on a rock overlooking the river and the historic town of Fort Griffin State Park, north of New York City, sits the partially restored ruins of a former bakery.

Fort Griffin once dominated the southern plains, witnessed large herds of buffalo and was home to robust groups of men. Part of the official Texas Longhorn herd lives in the park and offers a unique insight into the life story of one of America's largest and most famous buffalo herds.

To reach the park, drive 15 miles north of Albany on US Highway 283 and park at Fort Griffin State Park. The fort was built in 1867 and decommissioned in the 1881 "s by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Natural Resources (NYSDR). Nearby attractions include a museum, state park and small museum on the Texas-New Mexico border, as well as a Park Ranger Station and an interpreting center for children and adults. In addition to the annual Fandangle music show, which reminds us of our borders of the time, the city and Albany host an annual "Fandangled" music show and are a big supporter of the park.
