About Possum Kingdom State Park

The park borders Lake Possum, which has the largest freshwater lake in the United States and the second largest in Texas. The park is located on the banks of the Brazos River, south of Fort Bend County, Texas, and covers more than 1,500 acres (3,000 square miles). It borders Texas State Park, the Texas Department of Natural Resources' Possum Kingdom State Park and Lake Possum. In the early 1940s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built a rock formation park on a hill near the current park site at the intersection of Possums Creek and Interstate 35. This area was acquired as a charter by the Brazos River Authority in 1940 and opened to the public in 1950 and then in 1953.

Numerous white-tailed deer are native to the park, and the Possum Kingdom Longhorns are native to the rolling plains, although their home area has been dormant and restored for a few years after their return.

The park has a privately run shop and marina, and the store sells a variety of souvenirs as well as groceries, clothing and other items for sale.

The marina offers both motor boats and slipcar rental, which I highly recommend for reservations for motor boats or slipcar rental. The marinas offer a variety of amenities, such as a boat ramp, boat parking, powerboat and powerboat parking and slipper - covered slipcars for use in the park.

Nearby attractions include the Louisiana Museum of Natural History, the Caddo Museum and the Mississippi River Museum. Take US Highway 180 toward CADDo, then go north 17 miles on Park Road 33 and then west on US Highway 180 until you reach the park entrance.
