About Lake Whitney State Park

Lake Whitney State Park, which covers 1280.7 hectares, was leased by the Army in 1954 and opened in May 1965. It has been under state control since 2003. The park covers a total of 955 hectares without changing the water level. It is located on the shores of Lake Whitney, which flooded the early Texas settlements and stretches for about 2,000 kilometers from the Texas border to the Gulf of Mexico.

Towash Village is named after Towash, a Hainai Indian chief who moved to the area in 1835. The park is located on the west side of Lake Whitney, north of the Texas-Mexico border. It has disturbed tall grass remains, scattered groves of living oaks and a large number of old trees - growth trees.

Common animals are white - tail deer, raccoons and squirrels, occasionally foxes, coyotes and lynxes are sighted. The roadside landscape is littered with flames in spring - over nets of grasses and shrubs, as well as a large number of wildflowers. Nearby attractions include Lake Whitney State Park Trail, a popular hiking and biking trail, and the Tuba City Trailhead.

To get to the park from Interstate 35, take the Hillsboro Exit, follow the signs and take State Highway 22 to Hillsborough or West Whitney. The park is located in the Tuba area, south of the intersection of state road 22 and state road 22.
