About Old Fort Townsend State Park

The densely wooded park has a rich military history dating back to the pioneering era. The park consists of the original Fort Townsend, built by the US Army in 1856 to protect settlers, and a 367-hectare marine camping park that includes the salt-water coast of Port Townsend Bay. A lamella is cut into the surrounding forest and then cut back into its original shape to be used in the park.

Revived in 1874, the fortress flourished until 1895, when a fire destroyed the barracks and the property was used as an enemy training base during the Second World War. As commander of the army headquarters, he was responsible for the closure of the fort and the first closure in its history.

In 1953, the State Park took control of the site and in 1953 it was reopened as Old Fort Townsend State Park. Please note that the following general fee information does not apply to all parks and not to all parks. Thus, the fees for primitive campsites and landfills only apply to parks that have them.

Selecting a premium campsite in the park can charge a fee of $1,000 per campsite or $3,500 per year for the entire park.

Additional vehicles must be parked at a designated campsite with an additional parking space, and if a second vehicle is towed by a recreational vehicle, a $10 per night fee will be charged for the second vehicle.

In summer you can stay in the park for up to ten consecutive days and the length of your stay can be extended as long as you wish, for a total of 10 days. If you are camping, this fee is included in your camping fee for the duration of your stay. Check-in is 14: 30, check-out is 13: 00, and quiet times are 22 - 00 and 06 - 30.

The park has a long history as one of the oldest and most scenic state parks in New York State, with over 100 years of history.

The park offers group camps for up to 80 people, with fees varying depending on the size of the group. The maximum length of each site is 40 feet, possibly due to limited availability. For information, please contact the park at 1-888-campout or email campouts @ oldforttownsend.org.

The nearest launch pads are at Port Townsend, Fort Flagler and Hadlock, and the buoys are located on the launch pad of Old Fort Townsend State Park on the east side of the park. Moorland permits offered by the parks are available at $5 a day for a permit or $10 a month for a two-week permit.

It is the first and only public boat launch in Washington state and one of the oldest and most popular in Washington.
