Our Take

Shoes has always been a priority for me when it comes to outerwear. Shoes are protecting the feet, which is the most abused body part whenever you go hiking or camping (or any outdoor activity at that). That is why comfort should always come on top of the features that you should look for when buying a new pair of hiking shoes, especially those that you will be using for winter hiking.

We all know that snowy terrain can be unforgiving to the feet. It is slippery, cushion-y, and heavy. That is why I prefer my winter hiking shoes to be of topnotch quality. The Columbia Men's Newton Ridge Plus II Waterproof Hiking Boots for me is one of those that makes the cut. It is waterproof and and made of high-quality leather.

One particular quality that I love the most about this hiking boots is that its sole is very slide preventive. The pattern of the sole are designed efficiently to stop you from sliding in slippery snowy terrains and I am very impressed. The angle support is also noteworthy as it is both comfortable and tight, protecting my ankles from sudden sprain during the hike. And yes, it comes in NINE different colors!

Cons

  • Can have occasional leaks through the seams

Our Take

When it comes to hiking boots, functionality and durability should always take precedence over the overall aesthetic of the boots. The boots has to function as it should - waterproof, secured, has good support, etc. That is the reason why this Men's Fairbanks Omni-Heat Hiking Shoe from Columbia makes it to this list. Not only that it is really stylish and cool, it is also very functional.

First of all, let me tell you about the fit of this boots. If you find this shoes in your size, you definitely should get it. It fits perfectly which makes it more secure. A loose boot can end up to being the reason for an untoward accident like an ankle sprain that's why you need a perfectly fitting boots when you are out in a winter terrain. On top of that it also features a lace-up closure that you can adjust to a secure fit to make sure that it doesn't untangle during your hike.

It is also waterproof and very durable. These were by far the lightest, truest to fit, and most comfortable - not to mention one of the cheapest I tested (purchased in black for $104 on Amazon). I'm a 12 most times but wear a 13 running shoe. These fit true to 12. They had support but no break in period was required. Also loved that they don't have boot lace hooks that constantly come untied like the Danners I tested. I wore these Columbia boots around the house for two days and then we had a blizzard in KC so put them to the test in 28 degree temps, shoveling, snow blowing and playing with kids in a foot of snow for hours. My feet stayed warm and completely dry.

Highly recommended!

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Stylish
  • Fits as it should

Cons

  • Not as waterproof as other shoes in the list

Our Take

This winter hiking boot is a total savior. It is very comfortable, stylish, and fits as it should. They do not make my calf feel like its in a cast like most of the heavy duty cold weather boots do. They are soft inside and have a great sole. They also have a really good grip on the bottom that does not slip easily; its the rubber they used.

I really love these boots and they are pretty cute too. This is nice because if I wanted an insert or foot warmer in there or wear thick socks then there is room for that; most wear thick socks in the winter so this is so perfect.. I like that they do not fit snug on my toes, there is room so they don't get sore or squished. Ohh, and they don't make my feet sweat either.

All in all, I love this shoes and you should too!

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Warm
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • Can add a little height because of the soles

Our Take

This shoes ticks a lot of the right boxes, making it one of the best winter boots in this list. First of all, it fits to perfection. It has enough room for thicker socks which I doubt will be needed. These are going to be plenty warm. It also has pretty good waterproofing which is important for winter boots as they are used in wet snowy terrains.

On top of that, the footbed is very comfortable and overall the boots are surprisingly light. Soles seem to be quality material that should last. Word of warning, though, is that they add a bit of height so pay attention until you're used to them. Other than that they appear to be a great pair of boots. A great steal for the price too!

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Waterproof
  • Lightweight and comfortable

Cons

  • Not as durable as other boots in the list

Our Take

What gravitates me towards this boots is that it is made with high-quality and durable imported materials as well as the price. It has a rubber sole and a suede leather as an upper - making it both waterproof and comfortable at the same time.

These boots will not hold like a high end hiking boot would, but hey, they cost A FRACTION. They are fantastic for the price. Yes, they will likely break/rip within a year but before that you will put hundreds of miles on these boots.

They are light and comfortable. I recommend getting at least a 1/2 a size larger. The insole will need to be replaced after a few hikes, but the boot will hold on OK. Waterproof is average. In any case, get them. They look good and feel good and you wont break the bank.

Pros

  • Very inexpensive
  • Comfortable
  • Good warming capabilities
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • Long term durability can be an issue

Our Take

Let's talk about this boots in three different aspects: fit, build, and comfort.

First of all, this boots fits pretty true to size. The toe box is a little big but I'm OK with that as long as you're wearing thicker socks. Secondly, the build is average. . I've read some reviews where loops are falling off, could see that happening. Totally waterproof, good 3m inner lining. Durability is a long term concern to be honest.

And lastly, in terms of comfort, I think this is what makes it a great winter boots. After I broke them in, they were pretty great. I wore these in -50 degree for a weekend fishing trip and my feet never were cold. Feet were also never sore from all day use. For $40 I'll take these all day long! Great deal!!

Pros

  • Durable
  • Stylish
  • Ergonomic curved footbed
  • Very inexpensive

Cons

  • Not best waterproofing

Our Take

I've owned many pairs of hiking boots, cold weather boots, and military issued combat boots, so I can pretty much compare and contrast brands and models as I get to try them. And for this specific boot, I believe that it is average - not expensive, but does the job.

I loved that this boots have its soles curved at the heel and toe which will make walking more natural and comfortable instead of painful. This boots is perfect when worn with the right pair of thick socks to make it fit more perfectly and warm up your feet better. Right out of the box the boots were pre-laced and came with a spare pair of laces, a definite plus. The boots are made of durable rubber lowers and man-made simulated leather uppers around the laces. I have no doubt my feet will remain dry and warm in cold wet weather. The soles are hard rubber with sharp edges and multiple angles of tread which appear as if they will have no problem providing traction in wet or even snow/icy conditions.

I highly recommend this durable and stylish boots!
